WHO, WHAT, WHEN, HOW, WHY

The Lost Bus Blog returns, and with it, 2 new captains ready to crank the engine and get this bus moving again.

Hi!! My name is Cassie, and together with my husband Logan we are thrilled to be captaining the Lost Bus for the next year or so. We love people, action sports, hospitality, the beach, good coffee and Jesus!

Over the last 6 months we have been renovating the bus; swapping out the bunk beds for a queen and giving her a fresh look. But before we dive into what that time looked like, we’d love to share the backstory of how we even found ourselves learning to drive this thing on the back roads of Charleston.

Bus/van life has been a dream of Logan’s for over 10 years. At different points, he has jumped at opportunities to give it a go, but the timing never seemed right. Fast forward to our first date and Logan is telling me that it’s still something he’d really like to do one day and asks if I'd be interested. Always up for an adventure, I said: “Sure, I’m down”. We proceeded to dream about when this could happen and what it would ideally look like, but had no idea how and when this could come to fruition. We imagined living a nomadic lifestyle, practically serving local communities, loving on them and encouraging them in their walks with Jesus … 6 months into marriage, Logan is catching up with an old friend, sharing about married life, his new job, future plans, etc. After sharing this particular dream, this friend responds excitedly that he has to connect us with some buddies who have a converted school bus and are looking for new captains. He sends through the contact details and they wrap up the call. Logan texts Davis and a few minutes later I lose my husband to an hour-long phone call of excited chatter, which apparently finishes with Davis saying “the bus is yours”.

I then have Logan fill me in on what most of you likely know: it’s a converted school bus currently sitting in Charleston, SC, with a purpose to practically serve local communities around America. They have been looking for the next group to take the bus for a season and are excited about the prospect of it being us. We were excited too - it was exactly what we dreamed of - but also thinking, “Wait, what? Who are these guys?”

So we planned a trip down to Charleston to meet Davis, Cain and Josh (who converted the bus initially and oversee the non-profit). After lots of conversation, sharing of stories and brainstorming of possible renovations, we were REALLY EXCITED. As we drove away from Charleston, we committed to praying over this opportunity and taking practical steps toward captaining the bus in 2026.

We sensed the Lord leading us toward this opportunity and the enthusiasm grew. Things started to fall into place practically and by January 2026 we were headed down to Charleston to pick up the bus and drive her back to Greenville, SC, where she would be parked for the following 6 months.

Leaning to drive the beast!

We were so encouraged by the 2 short visits we had to Charleston; it was obvious the impact this bus has had on the community. The initial conversion had brought so many people together, each person contributing in a unique way. They have sent out each crew since with incredible joy and support, and we feel no different.

THE RENOVATIONS

Mid-January, the one and only snowstorm of the season blew through South Carolina and we decided that was the perfect time to begin our renovations. We lit the wood stove and got to work. First things first: strip the back third of the bus to its bare bones. I won’t bore you with the details of what the next 6 months looked like except to say that a lot was learnt (especially when it had to be done 2,3 times over). We were so blessed by the work done before us, the friends who helped with sourcing materials and family who let us park the bus on their property during this time. We hit the renos hard most weekends and more recently, a few evenings after work. Here’s a little summary of the work:

  • New bedroom and closet frame out with below-bed storage.

  • A garage

  • Curtains and cushion covers

  • Fresh paint and countertop look

  • Tow hitch to flat tow our car

  • New stove and oven

  • New flooring

  • A/c unit and ceiling vent

  • Kitchen storage rack

  • Mechanical things

The final product!!

And now, as Logan makes the last few welds and I lay one last coat of polyurethane down on the counters, we just can’t wait to actually begin the journey. Though we have some plans, we realize we ultimately have no idea what lies ahead; where we will end up, whom we will meet and what the Lord will have us do. But by God’s grace we hit the road to Go Forth and Do Good Things!
